The Earth Alliance's new Omega class Destroyer is a combination "battleship/air-craft carrier", capable of delivering maximum fire power combined with overwhelming fighter support and troop deployment.

Measuring 1400 meters in length, nearly 4/5 of one mile, the Omega class Destroyer is one of the most powerful ship in the Earth Alliance’s Navy today. Not only is it one of the most powerful, but this massive war vessel comprises the very heart and backbone of the modern Earthforce, space born military.

Like the Nova class Battleship, the Omega class Destroyer is a byproduct of the defunct “Orion Project.” After the end of the Earth/Minbari war, the Earth Alliance engaged in a massive military build up. Thus, once again the plans for the Orion class Dreadnought were introduced as a replacement for the bulk of the Alliance’s Navy.

Though large and powerful, the Orion class Dreadnought suffered from several major flaws; it was a large target, not very maneuverable and, do to it’s size, would not be very fast. These draw backs lead Earthforce engineers to scale down their design and create a ship that would have every advantage of the Orion, while not so greatly sacrificing speed and maneuverability. Thus the Omega class Destroyer was born.

Omega class Destroyers are driven by four “Proxima Drives” KD-1105 ion/fusion drive engines and powered by four Military-Type Tokamak Crop. 650 high-energy fusion reactors, with a combined power output of approximately 180,000 Terawatts (180,000,000,000,000,000 watts), giving the Omega class Destroyer the ability to form it's own jump point into hyperspace using four “Lockheed-Mitchell Corp” HSI-7A vortex generators.

Armament for this ship is as follows: Rear defenses include four rear firing plasma lasers, four rear firing Pulse Cannons. Forward firing weapons include two plasma lasers and two forward firing Pulse Cannons. Along the ship's sides are twelve omni-directional phalanx defense pods. These pods are mounted with Pulse Cannons and particle lasers. Omega class Destroyers can also be armed with fusion tipped missiles, with two launchers and a total of forty missiles.

Omega class Destroyers carry a standard crew of over 850 duty personnel and 12 command level officers. Crew compliment can and usualy does include an additional 120 marines. Destroyers have a standard pay-load of some 36 attack fighters/bombers four shuttles, and can carry 80 armored cavalry and as many as 18,000 troops.

The fighter lauch system used on the Omega class Destroyer is both simple and efficent. Sometimes refered to as the “Pez”, the Starfuries are held side by side, within a series of off-set elevators refered to as “locks.” When the launch order is given, the Starfury on the right is raised and fired from it’s launch platform, and is immidiatly followed by the vessel to its left and vice-versa. With sixteen locks per Destroyer, each holding two Starfuries, an Omega class vessel can luanch all 36 of her fighters in less than two minutes under emergency conditions.

Unlike most ships in the Earthforce Navy, the Omega class Destroyers do employ a type of artificial gravity, unavailable to Earth Alliance war ships twenty years before. Artificial gravity is produced by rotating the ship's center section in a clockwise direction at 10 m/s^2 or 1.2g.

To provide a stable turning axis, the center section rotates around a drive shaft; a reinforced hollow bar that runs between the rear and forward section. Rotation is acomplished using an advanced super-conductor motor similar to those used on the hover-trains on earth. This prevents wear on the drive shaft and the rotating section, as the electro-magnetic super conduction system floats the rotating section around the axis. As there is little to no physical contact betwen the forward, rear and rotating section, as well as the axis, Omega class Destroyers experiance almost no frictional deteroration.

Destroyers are broken into three sections and each section is designated for a specific fuction. The forward or “Hangar” section of the ship is a zero gravity enviroment that is designated for star-craft support, main weapons, and the ship's main sensor/communication array. The ship’s secondary storage bays are also housed in this section.

Center or “Habitation” section is where the ship's control and command reside. Primary life support, crew quarters and the ships main computers are contained in this area. The habitation section also houses the ships main storage bays, as well as a small botanical garden of limited potential.

The rear or “Engeneering” section an Omega class Destroyer is designated to the ship's ion and jump engines, fusion reactor, primary and secondary fuel tanks and aft weapons array. As neither the forward or rear areas have gravity, the boots of Earth Alliance personnel have Velcro tipped toes which prevent them from floating off in the zero gravity areas of their ships.

Compared to the Nova class vessels, the Omega class Destroyers have significantly more recreational area. This is due to the fact that the Omega class Destroyers were designed a little more with their crews in mind and not simply the weapon systems.

The most recent additions to the Omega’s impressive Destroyer family, is the Omega-X class Destroyers. These new vessel were the first to be constructed using bio-technology gained from the nearly two year scientfic research performed on a Shadow Battle-Crab, un-earthed on the Jupiter moon Ganamede. While the Shadow vessel did go berzerk, destroying the hangar it was being held in, Earth Alliance sceintists gained valuable knowledge from the alien vessel.

The acquired bio-technology was used to enhance and then construct a fleet of Omega-X class Destroyers, as an experiment to see if the newly acquired Shadow technology was compatible with Earth Alliance science. The experiment was a rousing success, creating the most powerful vessel ever to serve the Alliance.

While not as strong or efficent as the Shadow vessels themselves, this new class Destroyer was ten times as powerful as its predecesors. Bio-armor, combined with the use of the revolutionary Fusion Guns previously seen only on Minbari vessels, provided Omega-X class vessels with greater firepower and durability than any vessel currently in the service of either the Narn or Centauri fleets.

Also, through the annalisis of the gravimetric technology employed by the Shadows, scientists have taken a large step towards un-locking the secret of artificial gravity. Though the complex physics of this technology is still being annalized, man Earth Alliance scientists beleive it to be only a few years before they will be able to construct vessels as powerful as those used by the Minbari Federation - possibly superior.
